Turquoise has been, since about 200 B.C., extensively used by southwestern U.S Native Americans and by many of the Indian tribes in Mexico. The Native American Jewelry or "Indian style" jewelry with turquoise mounted in or with silver dates back to around 1875, when a white trader persuaded a Navajo craftsman to make turquoise and silver jewelry using coin silver. Prior to this time Native Americans had used turquoise for many years to embellish and enhance jewelry created from beads, like necklaces and earrings, and used solitaire semi-nuggets or carved fetishes as pendants. Setting the Turquoise in Silver became a tradition by the 1900's and the Zuni and Navajo developed their own methods and styles for doing this. Today's use of turquoise in jewelry continues to evolve, and the stone's wide range of colors and forms have been utilized in many ways. Its abundant use in jewelry of all kinds makes it is highly sought after and its value is continually increasing.
