Native American Turquoise Antiqued Sterling Silver Concho Belt.

Product No:2282-CN

Native American Turquoise Antiqued Sterling Silver Concho Belt.

This concho belt is the real Harvey treat. This particular design came along in the 1950s from the old Harvey Santa Fe railroad stores. They call it Route 66 jewelry. Because, between the 1950s and 1970s, if you were on a road trip on Route 66 you would see Harvey's stores on the side of the road all throughout the southwest. The buckle and each of the twelve conchos on this one hold a genuine sky blue nugget of Sleeping Beauty Turquoise (the Tiffany of Turquoise). The Sterling Silver buckle and conchos were die struck and hand stamped with traditional southwestern designs.. The buckle is 2-1/2" by 3". Each of the 13 conchos are 1-1/2" by 2". The leather belt can be cut to fit. Send us your belt size. Stamped Sterling.

Concha belts are one of the most striking articles of Indian Jewelry. The medallions or plates of silver vary in number according to size. The older type had holes in the center, separated by a bar, through which was passed the strap forming the belt. The first belts were made only of concha's, with leather thongs used for fastening. Later a silver harness buckle was used, then slides of soft copper were used to attach and slide the concha's on belts and finally elaborate buckles replaced the leather thongs and simple buckles. The use of turquoise and other adornment on concha's date from the 1920's. The variety of sizes, materials and quality of silversmithing and lapidary masterpieces, with every piece being hand wrought and crafted.

Turquoise is the birthstone of December & anniversary gemstone for the 11th year of marriage.Turquoise, the robin's egg blue gemstone worn by Pharaohs and Aztec Kings, is probably one of the oldest gemstones known. Yet, only its prized blue color, a color so distinctive that its name is used to describe any color that resembles it, results in its being used as a gemstone.
